Here’s an interesting video I saw over at Gizmodo that shows us air traffic response in Europe to the volcanic dust cloud.
Someone made the comment over there that I had been thinking to myself, which is – nary a news report aired without the reminder that the airline industry was loosing $2b per day or whatever. Yeah, fine. That’s… a lot of money. They make a lot of money. Obviously they’re loosing money. The video above covers the period of about a week. If I loose a weeks pay, is anyone reminding America how much money that is? Does it really make any difference if I loose 1/52nd of my annual income? I get that there are additional costs associated with not providing a service, versus not getting paid. So it’s really more than just lost income for them. It’s complicated, but can we please put things into perspective and cut it out with the doom and gloom? Maybe I’m getting the wrong read on the way it was being presented but I just don’t feel sorry for them. Oh noes! Do I need to pay extra, extra for my luggage now to help them float a week?
Also neat is this place called Flight Radar 24, who provided the data for the video, which I guess you can play air traffic controller with. Or plot your terrorist strategies with this helpful guide!
