I was volunteering on the farm this past weekend and was like: “Hey, if any job openings pop up, I’d be interested.” They were like: “Ok, how about working in the farmstand next season?” I was like: “Heck yeah!” So hopefully from April/May – October I will be working at the farm. I will be helping out in the farmstand during my volunteer days for now, helping them during the fall CSA pick ups. For those who don’t know, a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a share that you buy in a farm during the growing season. This means that every week you get a share of the harvest, usually a box of veggies in season. For example, we bought a fall farm share from Cedar Circle and this past weekend we got 5 lbs potatoes, 2 butternut squash, 3 lbs onions, 5 heads garlic, spinach, beets, lettuce. We roasted a chicken with some of the veggies and it was great. Some farms do meat CSA’s. Ben’s boss/friend buys a part of a cow and gets all kinds of different cuts of meat. We bought some grass-fed ground beef and stew meat from them and it was delish. We are thinking of splitting a share with them next year. We know where the beef comes from and how it was raised and butchered (check out the documentary Food Inc. to have your eyes open about why you want to know where your food comes from).
Anyway, back on the farm…if all works out well I’ll be fulfilling one of my goals which has been to work on a farm. My plan is to see if I can get regular part-time work at King Arthur once the season is over and then work on the farm. I’ll be poor but happy and more active.
Now for something shocking…Ben and I will be running in a race together this Saturday! There is a little race in Orford called the Backroad Burner. It’s a combo of street and dirt roads, a hilly 3.6 mile course. Ben bought himself some official running shoes and gear and is quite proud of himself. He is still sticking to the trails, so maybe at some point he’ll be announcing his first trail race?
