I wanted to find Haldman on campus the day after I updated my phone. Apple Map;
Uh….
Then I quickly downloaded Google’s Map App;
Ahhhhhhh, relief. Apple’s new native iPhone map app is atrocious. Please don’t defend it by telling me how crazy it is that I hold as much power in my hand as I already do, and I’m blessed to have what I have. I’ll agree with you, it’s ridiculous and it’s better than the map app I’m developing, but Google Maps already exists and it’s waaaaaaaaay better. Just keep using it! It’s this competitive, almost vindictive, attitude that’s gotten Apple where it is today but I wonder for how much longer it will last. My phone crashed three times in the first day after the update. I wonder whether or not their golden age is coming to an end.
At least there’s a way to continue using Google’s map.

I like the generic green area in the first one labeled “College”.
Hah! In their defense, that area is actually called ‘College Park’. The screen is cutting off the Park bit, but when you actually slide over to look at the park the text disappears. Maybe if I put the building I’m trying to find on the edge of the screen it’ll tell me half of the name of the building that I don’t know the location of.
The area of the park is a lot more nuanced than what they’re showing as well. Google displays it much more accurately.
I’ve since had trouble updating other apps on the phone. It’ll just pop up an error that says it can’t download the app right now. Siri is still as terrible as she was when they launched that ‘beta’ service as well. OMG, it’ll tell me the scores of baseball games now?!?! Stop the presses!!!!!!!!!111!!!! Well, that also necessitates Siri understanding what I’m asking it in the first place, which it doesn’t.
Frankly it would be a lot more useful if it could make the phone do stuff, like skipping tracks, or fast forwarding, or actually taking dictation. Like, doing it for real and not for fakies.
I spent 5 minutes trying to send Amy a hands-free text in the car the other day with Siri. Never actually got it to compose, let alone send.
And sometimes webpages don’t load now, even on Wifi.
The phone hasn’t crashed again though! This 4S might be my last iPhone. Or, rather I wish I had stayed with iOS5. The hardware is the bees knees. Wonder how hard it is to regress.
