as compared to

I broke down, well I didn’t really break or fight particularly hard against it – but I did order the new iPhone last week. I was told to expect it this weekend but it has not come, which is fine because we were out of town. The AT&T website is classically useless in providing any sort of information on my order and the phone lines are tied up. Which is also fine, for now. It’s only a phone after all, and not that much more impressive than the one it replaces. In fact, if Siri and a faster processor were the only new features I’d probably have picked up the iPhone 4 or just stayed where I am with the 3Gs. But then they showed the photos from the new lens and sensor, and the fact that it can do 1080p video and I was sold.

This is a comparison someone did of the new phone and my current DSLR camera, and I have mixed feelings about it. You should definitely watch this in HD and full screen it. Tiny video will hide a lot.

I have to say that even though the DSLR is hands down superior in almost every way, there is one category in which the phone wins every time, and that’s in my pocket. Literally and figuratively. But as I’ve already purchased both, the cost comparison is sort of moot for me personally. And I don’t see anyone in their right mind selling off their DSLR kit to replace it with a phone, but the DSLR is a bit threatened just in the sense of – will I leave it behind more and more? I dunno. I love using it. I love what it offers. Maybe there isn’t a real downside to this. Both have a place. I have a phone and it takes nice quality shots and video and it’s always with me. I have a DSLR that rocks and I take that with me when the time is right. Everyone is happy!
