post saga

And the world shrugged.

After all the waiting and wanting, it’s finally here. And life goes on, the way it should be. No confetti dropped from the ceiling. I just immediately set to all the things I’d ever wanted internet for and it was good. Alex and I played a metric ton of video games over the weekend, that was good. We watched some streamed Netflix and bought a fridge online and ordered some gifts.

Quickly and with prejudice, I noticed that my initial instinct to grab my phone every time I needed to get online turned into me leaving my phone on the bedside table all morning. Texts and calls came in and I was upstairs, using the computer. So I’m now wondering – why am I paying $70/mo for a phone that could very easily sit on me bedside all day? I bought the phone almost strictly to gain access to the web at home, but I have a much better way for doing that now. Sure, I dig the apps and the games and the podcasts and the techiness and the connection it’s provided for the last 20 months but I think I’ve fallen out of love with my iPhone. My daily life consists of getting up, driving to work, being at work, driving home and now being able to use a real computer for all things interactive. I’m not coordinating masses of friends and activities all day. I wish I were, but I’m not meeting anyone anywhere. Nothing is going on. Nothing is happening. The phone shines like a beacon when we’re on the road or out of town but I could probably make do with a crappy phone again. And I just bought myself a teeny tiny laptop for traveling that after purchase costs me nothing every month. It’s like an iPad, except actually a computer that you can like, do stuff and things with.

Yeah, so weird about the possible phone ramifications. This is unexpected. I was just recently preparing myself for the new iPhone in September and what should be my free upgrade in November, but now I’m wondering if I might not use the end of my contract as a way to escape all together. Of course it doesn’t help that this three day work week nonsense is starting to cramp my style. I need to enact some austerity measures here.

  1. Yeah, three day work weeks since April or June. We were also at three days from October to January. Things are looking up though, I think.

I might come back to the crappy phone.

  2. Sorry to hear it. I go back and forth between really wanting an iPhone and not. I currently have a crappy phone and it’s fine other than the gadget factor.

  3. Three days has pluses and minuses. I’m generally content actually (don’t let the bosses know). I just shouldn’t be buying laptops I don’t absolutely need, and then things would be fine.

I’m not sure I’d have an iPhone if I didn’t get on board specifically because of the internet factor. I resisted it until the 3Gs model and I didn’t run right out to replace it with the 4, so I expect I could have kept on resisting. Unless you’re paying close to what the iPhone costs per month for your crappy phone, I wouldn’t bother. That was the other thing – my pay-per-minute T-Mobile phone was starting to cost me nearly $50 each month. So stepping up for waaaaaaay more phone seemed good. I haven’t looked recently, but if I could get a phone for $20-30/mo I might be tempted.

That said, when we’re on the road or out of town….. man it’s nice to have the internet with you at all times (signal pending). I would definitely miss it, and that may be what keeps me on board.

  4. I could see how the three day a week schedule would be really nice and challenging at the same time.
