Yeah, so our toilet wasn’t working up to its potential yesterday. Naturally I was blamed and as I was plunging away I could hear the other drains in the house gurgling. No matter how hard I plunged, the toilet just would not drain quickly. Amy ran the washing machine and more gurgling.
Then I put it all together around 8pm last night and ran out in the backyard and started digging. A tremendous amount of snow has melted in the past week due to all the rain we’ve had… plus all the rain we’ve had. We live at a pretty decent elevation and it’s down hill in basically every direction, but our site is relatively flat. Water has been pooling pretty good in the yard and I guess the ground and the septic system has had all it can stands and it can’t stands no more.
So I dug a couple trenches from the septic/leach field area to the driveway and out to the street. In the dark, while it was drizzling. Every once and again I’d catch a hint of septic sweetness. Yum. Had some good flow but the water just kept coming up out of the ground. When I came outside this morning there was a nice film of ice over my trenches but I could see that the water was still flowing 10 hours later.
Today’s been sunny but not particularly warm, and this weekend is supposed to be dark and damp. I’ve blown a call into our septic specialists and hopefully they can come pump us out Monday. They were coming in a few months but I told them it was time to mobilize. The hope is we’ll buy a few weeks before the tank starts dumping to a three week drier leach field. Pray for us.
This is country.

yuck
If Ben were not out putting miles on the beast he would provide an update on the septic problem. He mentioned on Friday that . . . “Septic guys came today and drained the tank. Toilet is in full effect, and the yard seems hugely better as a result of the trenching.” (In case you were wondering.)
We should give you posting privileges.
It’s all true, they pumped the poo on Friday and the house seems happy. The yard continues to drain due to the rain we had over the weekend. I’m shocked at the amount of water that’s coming up to the surface.
There are other less critical areas of the yard that don’t seem to be percolating at all. I think the ground hasn’t fully thawed out yet. We haven’t had any of those good warm days yet. The sun has been out a little but it’s still in the 40s.
🙁
We are sending spring your way. Eliot’s had the a/c on a couple of days already.
I doubt it. Flurries today.
