I’ve had a nice little relationship with the Appalachian Trail. My dad took us out a few times in PA when I was young and then I got a serious taste when I was 15 and I tackled the Hundred Mile Wilderness with Kieve.
I’ve since cheated my way to the top of Springer Mountain by driving most of the way and filled in some of the gaps here in New Hampshire. The trail literally runs on the sidewalk outside my office. I hike it to and from my car every day. The trail climbs Mt. Cube, which is visible from our kitchen window.
Amy and I returned to Baxter for my 30th birthday and a failed attempt at the summit of Katahdin a few years ago. Looking at the pictures now it makes me feel like maybe we were too timid, but what they don’t show is that the weather was moving very quickly and it went back to bad very quickly.
I’ve dreamed of doing the whole thing but even if I never do I feel like I’ve gotten a lot out of the trail. This video is plucking at my hamstrings though. Maybe we should settle for the Long Trail for something a little shorter? There are a ton of great trails in this country. Why limit ourselves?

Thanks for the ride 🙂 I was looking for parts I might recognize; boulder field or hawks on the ridge in PA, Mt. Greylock or the bridge over the Connecticut River.
Yeah, there’s a lot left out. I could identify only what part of the trail he probably was on, but nothing specific other than the start and finish. And the Presidential Range, but not exactly where.
It does give you a taste for wanderlust. I admire anyone who completes the through-hike.
