colonization

The ah, ants moved out first right?

There’s a leafcutter colony over at the wonderful Montshire Museum. They’ve recreated the various chambers and tunnels from clear plexiglass so you can stand and watch the different ants doing their respective chores. There’s the graveyard and the fungus gardens and the dumps and a chamber where they dump in leaves to fuel the whole operation. The leaves actually grow the fungus that sustains the ants. It’s amazing. We took our niece there last Fall and I spent the entire time watching the ants. I only ever caught a glimpse of the giant queen hiding out in one of the gardens. She’s easily bigger than a bumblebee.
