death race

I have a subscription to Outside magazine which I enjoy reading despite the feeling of unworthiness it leaves me with every time I put it down. I finally tucked into the November issue last night and was most drawn to the story by Mark Jenkins about his 2010 attempt at the Death Race.

Even though this race takes place in Pittsfield, VT, a place less than 2 hours from our house and a bit south of where we were married, I’d never heard of it.

While I’ll never compete in something like this, I can see the allure. I even feel the urge to try it, but the reality is I wouldn’t last beyond the first 30 minutes. I can’t even maintain basic fitness. The event doesn’t really seem to advertise dates so I’m assuming they don’t encourage spectators but I’d very much like to see this race in person in 2011.

I highly recommend the Outside read and this New York Times write-up from 2009. They also did a video that I could embed but they’d probably be cross with me.
