inshore fishery

We threw JP a post-wedding bachelor party this past weekend. Events included inshore fishing, eating caught fish, and playing round after round of Dominion. We’re geeks.

Jeff, Anthony and I went deep sea night fishing out of Brooklyn maybe 8 or 9 years ago and it was misery itself. The stuff of nightmares. We ate some manner of Turkish dinner and hopped directly onto a 100′ boat that bobbed through inky blackness for 2 hours. Somewhere in the middle we bought anti-vomitory meds from the commissary but Jeff and I were unable to keep them down long enough to take effect. Once we got to the fishing grounds, the fun really began. There was another boat about out there illuminated by its own flood lights and it appeared as a toy, barreling around in the rough seas. Our captain made no attempts to keep the boat pointing into the waves, or maybe there wasn’t anywhere to point the boat that would keep us from rolling around. I took one hallucinatory heave over the edge and went below to try to sleep. The seating area had been constructed to some sort of medieval torture specification wherein the bench was no more than six inches deep. If you sat on one normally you’d probably end up supporting a goodly portion of your weight on your legs.

Experiment time!
Nail a 2×6 board to the top of a mechanical bull, lay down on your side and try to sleep tight. Don’t forget you feel like you have the flu too! Set your alarm for 6 hours later. Enjoy.

At some point towards the end the seas died down and I staggered upstairs. I honestly don’t remember if Anthony caught any fish that night. I certainly didn’t cast a single line. The return trip was good and we watched the deck hands clean what fish had been caught.

I say all this to let you know the concern with which I viewed this past weekends activity. We all took dramamine waaay in advance of going out and I donned two wrist bands that Amy used during our Alaskan adventure. Turns out, the only one to get sick was the bachelor himself. But he rallied and ended up catching the biggest fish. The prey was black sea bass and we returned to shore with an obscene amount. It was like catching fish in a barrel.

Pictures are here and a video similarly uninspired as the wedding one should appear soonish.
